Don’t Ignore This Domain Email. Your Website Could Be Taken Offline
If you own a .com, .net, or .info domain name, you may receive an email asking you to confirm your contact details. Many people assume this email is spam and ignore it. That can lead to your website being taken offline.
What the email looks like
To the right is an example of the email you may receive: It usually comes from a domain provider such as Register.com and asks you to confirm your email address.
This email is not spam
Even though it may look suspicious, this email is legitimate. It is required by ICANN, the global organisation that manages domain names. They require all domain owners to verify their contact details from time to time. If you do not confirm your details, your domain will be suspended.
What happens if you ignore it
If you do nothing, your domain registrar will deactivate your domain. When that happens:
- Your website will stop working
- Your emails linked to the domain may stop
- Visitors will see a holding page instead of your site
It may look like the lower image on the right.
This is not a hack or a virus. It is the registrar disabling your domain due to missing verification.
How to fix it
Follow these steps:
- Open the email you received
- Click the “Confirm Email Address” button
- Complete the verification
- It takes less than a minute.
Once done, your domain stays active and your website continues to work as normal.
Important: This does NOT apply to .co.nz or .nz domains
If your domain ends in .co.nz or .nz, you will not receive this type of email.
This requirement only applies to international domains such as:
.com
.net
.info
If you receive the email and are not sure what to do call us at Website Angels and we will help. We can confirm it is genuine and guide you through the process.
